"My son now works for a Japanese bank and I am so pleased"
Fifteen months ago, I wrote on this site about my concerns for my son. He was 24 years old and working 100-hour weeks in M&A at a major US investment bank in New York, and I was worried about his health. I wanted to complain to the bank about his boss; people here told me not to.
I'm glad I didn't. The situation has now resolved itself. My son left the US bank and he now works in M&A for a Japanese bank instead.
His life has been transformed.
Instead of working 100-hour weeks, my son now works regular 50-60 hour weeks. His hours are better, his schedule is better, his health is better, and I am no longer worried about him.
He's taken a pay cut. He used to earn $190k, but the Japanese bank pays him $160k. It's more than worthwhile. Young people in banking need to remember that success isn’t measured only by salary or job title. You need to prioritize balance, rest, and health because no career is worth sacrificing your well-being for.
The best path is one that allows you to live, not just work.
