Rising hedge fund paying $1m in London hired an ex-Balyasny quant

Ilex Capital, a hedge fund founded by former Citadel traders in London, has been rising fast. Its assets under management have swelled to $7bn, its headcount has exceeded 40 and it has moved into a big new Kensington office. Among the recent arrivals are quants.

This month, Ilex hired James Osoi as a quant researcher. He was most recently at private equity firm Orbis Capital Management, where he worked on quant research and data insights, but he also spent over five years at Balyasny. There, he worked in quant and quantamental research across London and Singapore.

Ilex doesn't seem to have many quants, but one of its longest serving is Paul Ward. He joined last January from UBS, where he was head of quantitative investment solutions for UBS' wealth management arm.

Working at Ilex can be lucrative. In its most recent accounts for the year ending March 2025, the hedge fund said it paid 23 people an average of £738k ($997k) in 'salaries and wages'. The top earner at Ilex, meanwhile, brought home £80m.
