Pay at Hudson River Trading in London: £940k on average for quants and traders
Proprietary trading firm Hudson River Trading had a stellar 2024, achieving record net trading revenues of $8bn (£5.95bn). Newly released accounts for its multiple entities in the UK revealed that the firm's European staff had a sizeable effect.
2024 accounts for 'Hudson River Trading Europe Ltd.', 'HRT Research Ltd.' and 'HRTSVC Ltd.' released via Companies House over the weekend. Profit across the three entities more than doubled year-on-year to £111.7m, and pay across all three divisions rose. Business Insider reported that Hudson River "nearly" doubled its revenue globally last year, suggesting that the UK businesses performed better than the rest.
Hudson River Trading's main UK offices are in London and Dublin. It employed 152 people across its three UK companies last year. It paid those employees an average of £652k but some entities paid much more than others.
Hudson River Trading Europe, which makes money by "trading securities in the UK and Europe for proprietary purposes," paid 26 employees an average of £945.5k. HRT Research, which "provides research and technology services," paid £944.3k.
The biggest entity in terms of headcount, HRTSCV, paid the least. It employed 102 people last year and paid them an average of £508.8k. This entity's principal activity is "supporting the global trading platform used by related companies," but also appears to employ the firm's administrative and operations staff.
Hudson River Trading was predominantly known as a high-frequency trading (HFT) firm in the past, bringing in much of its revenue from market-making. In recent years, though, it has expanded into mid-frequency strategies and held some of its positions for longer periods. The firm has had a similarly successful start to 2025, with $5.4bn in revenue over the first half of the year. The proof is in the pudding for its change of priorities, it seems.
