Job Description

The Role

Canopius has a highly regarded Engineering & Property team comprising specialist underwriters and claims professionals who work collaboratively to deliver exceptional service and innovative solutions to a global client base.

We are seeking an experienced Claims Adjuster with a background in handling Engineering claims, ideally within the London Market. This role is suited to someone who has already built a foundation in Engineering claims and is looking to further develop their technical expertise within a leading specialty insurer. Typically, candidates will have gained several years' experience managing Engineering claims within an insurer, MGA or loss adjusting environment and will be confident handling claims with increasing levels of complexity and exposure.

Candidates with a civil or mechanical engineering qualification and/or industry experience will be of particular interest, bringing additional technical insight to the management of engineering-related losses.

This role requires an individual who can proactively manage Engineering claims from first notification through to resolution, applying sound technical judgement, delivering excellent customer service and contributing to the continued success of the Engineering Claims team.

Key Responsibilities

Manage a portfolio of Engineering claims from first notification through to resolution, ensuring proactive handling, timely decision-making and excellent service delivery.

Investigate, evaluate and adjust Engineering claims applying sound technical judgement and delivering fair and commercially focused outcomes.

Analyse policy coverage, liability and quantum issues, identifying key areas of exposure and developing appropriate claims strategies.

Establish and maintain accurate reserves in line with the Canopius reserving philosophy, ensuring significant developments are identified and communicated promptly.

Build strong working relationships with brokers, insureds, underwriters and other stakeholders to facilitate effective claims management and positive customer outcomes.

Appoint and manage loss adjusters, surveyors, engineers, lawyers and other experts as required, ensuring investigations are proportionate and focused on achieving optimal outcomes.

Work closely with underwriting colleagues to provide claims insight, support risk selection and contribute to portfolio management discussions.

Oversee delegated and service provider handled claims where applicable, ensuring handling standards, service levels and reserving expectations are met.

Identify and escalate complex coverage, technical or reputational issues where appropriate, seeking guidance and collaboration when required.

Contribute to claims audits, peer reviews and continuous improvement initiatives, supporting the ongoing development of the Engineering Claims function.

Maintain awareness of market developments, industry trends and emerging risks affecting engineering-related business classes.

Skills and Experience

Proven experience handling Engineering claims within the London Market or wider commercial insurance sector.

Strong technical understanding of Engineering classes, including Construction All Risks (CAR), Erection All Risks (EAR), Machinery Breakdown and associated engineering exposures.

Demonstrable experience investigating, assessing and resolving Engineering claims with appropriate levels of autonomy.

Strong knowledge of policy interpretation, coverage analysis and claims strategy.

Ability to build effective relationships with brokers, clients, underwriters, loss adjusters and technical experts.

Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering qualifications and/or industry experience would be highly desirable.

Relevant insurance qualifications (ACII, Cert CII or progression towards these) are desirable.

Strong analytical, negotiation and decision-making skills.

Knowledge of Lloyd's and the London Market would be advantageous.
