Associate Director – Institutional Non-Financial Risk (UK & Europe)

Non-disclosed London, United Kingdom

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Associate Director to lead and oversee non-financial risk management across a major institutional banking business operating throughout the UK and Europe.

This is a senior, high-profile position partnering with business leaders and risk stakeholders across multiple European financial centres. You will play a key role in ensuring non-financial risks are appropriately identified, assessed, managed and reported within the organisation’s risk appetite, supporting sustainable business growth, strong governance and effective regulatory compliance.

The role spans several institutional banking divisions, including Markets, Transaction Banking, Corporate Finance and Corporate Coverage. You will also provide regional oversight of operational resilience, business continuity, crisis management and third-party risk management, ensuring alignment with applicable regulatory requirements.

Working closely with senior stakeholders across the business and control functions, you will contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the organisation’s risk framework, controls and governance practices in a complex and evolving regulatory environment.

Key responsibilities
  1. Act as a trusted non-financial risk adviser to senior business leaders, supporting strategic decision-making and effective risk management.
  2. Provide independent oversight and constructive challenge regarding risk exposures, control effectiveness, emerging risks and business change initiatives.
  3. Lead and coordinate risk governance forums, ensuring effective reporting, escalation and decision-making.
  4. Ensure material non-financial risks are identified, assessed, monitored and managed appropriately, with clear accountability and timely escalation.
  5. Drive continuous improvement in risk controls, governance processes, management information and reporting.
  6. Coordinate the annual risk appetite process, ensuring alignment with wider organisational objectives and requirements.
  7. Interpret evolving regulatory expectations and translate them into practical, sustainable business actions.
  8. Support enterprise-wide risk transformation initiatives, embedding enhanced frameworks, processes and controls.
  9. Provide regional expertise and oversight in operational resilience and third-party risk management, including relevant UK and European regulatory requirements.
  10. Partner with senior business leaders and colleagues across Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit and other control functions to strengthen the overall control environment.
  11. Promote a strong risk culture, accountability and effective collaboration across the business.

About you

The successful candidate will bring substantial experience in institutional banking and non-financial risk management within a complex financial services environment.

You will ideally demonstrate:

  1. Extensive experience in institutional banking, with a strong understanding of one or more areas such as Markets, Transaction Banking, Corporate Finance or Coverage.
  2. Deep knowledge of non-financial risk frameworks, governance, control environments and risk appetite management.
  3. A proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and provide effective challenge while balancing commercial priorities with sound risk management.
  4. Experience translating regulatory requirements into practical business outcomes.
  5. A track record of leading risk, control or regulatory change initiatives across multiple jurisdictions.
  6. Knowledge of operational risk, conduct risk, operational resilience and relevant prudential and regulatory requirements.
  7. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to present complex risk issues clearly and concisely.
  8. Experience working collaboratively across business, risk and control functions within a matrixed organisation.
  9. Leadership capability, including the ability to develop talent, promote accountability and foster a positive risk culture.
  10. Experience using risk data, management information and reporting insights to support effective governance and decision-making.
  11. Familiarity with enterprise risk systems, governance platforms and control monitoring frameworks.

The opportunity

This is an opportunity to take on a visible regional leadership role, influence senior decision-making and contribute to the continued development of a robust non-financial risk environment across an international institutional banking business.

The position offers the opportunity to work across multiple business lines and jurisdictions, partnering with senior stakeholders to strengthen risk management, enhance operational resilience and support sustainable growth.
