Liberty Mutual Surety™ has an excellent opportunity for a Sr. Surety Field Underwriter with our team in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In this role, you will be responsible for soliciting, marketing, underwriting and servicing complex risks for a book of business/assigned agents/brokers within the country. This includes underwriting new and existing surety accounts in conformance with underwriting guidelines to determine if they meet risk acceptability standards and/or the strategy of the organization, assisting in the review and analysis of risks that are medium to large and complexity, performing financial and credit analyses of bond submissions and making recommendations/taking action as appropriate. You are also accountable for developing and executing field marketing plan as directed and demonstrating Surety knowledge necessary to independently underwrite business.

Job responsibilities
- Market, underwrite & service complex risks for a book of business in The Netherlands. This may include largest and/or highest-risk accounts (e.g. large core contract/commercial, co-surety accounts, foreign ownership / specialty accounts, complex programs, large books of business, private equity accounts etc....). Support efforts to implement underwriting strategy.
- Meet with customers and agents/brokers from assigned territory to solicit business/submissions via marketing efforts and educate customers on Global Surety policies, procedures, appetite, and requirements. Act in a consultative capacity and discuss/review accounts and performance. May identify and escalate cross-selling opportunities to the appropriate internal product lines underwriters. Provide directions for topics to be addressed in meetings with brokers, customers, and others, as necessary. Attend industry events representing Liberty Mutual.
- Originate, lead, and underwrite surety transactions. Perform analytical evaluations of financial statements on both a static and trend basis and complex credit analysis. Determines the present and historical financial position of the account and monitors financial position of risk through analysis of periodic statements and work in process data if appropriate.
- Develop/maintain strong relationships and meets with brokers as well as customers and oversee a book of surety business or oversee underwriting of assigned accounts. This may be instead within a defined territory. Meets production, marketing, and profitability goals as set by manager and assist in business development by soliciting business/submissions. Develop a book of business to broaden the portfolio with various accounts in compliance with Underwriting Guidelines and delegated authority.
- Handle account submissions and develop strategies to support producer/customer efforts to increase business activities & submissions and demonstrate the ability to work with complex situations & develop creative solutions/strategies. Track/escalate underwriting/accounting/workflow issues on moderately complex risks such as but not limited to captive reinsurance programs, joint ventures and international transactions.
- Analyse exposures and determine the appropriate surety coverage and conditions, risk exposure, loss history, and economic trends that may impact terms and conditions offered to the client. As directed and as applicable by country, evaluate business continuity arrangements and funding mechanisms (such as adequacy of life insurance) to preclude financial drain of customer in the event of the demise of (an) owner or other loss.
- Work directly and independently with aligned home office underwriter(s)
- Provide technical expertise & direction for less experienced underwriters and act as a mentor.
- Serve as the trusted advisor & underwriting resource for your aligned producers/customers & territory.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable internal and external laws, regulations, policies, procedures and guidance.
- Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions and best practice methodology in order to minimise risk as incorporated into the Underwriting framework.
- Support Surety Attorneys and Manager, review and negotiate policy terms and conditions including assisting with the production of bond language and endorsements.
- Stay abreast of competitors and identify opportunities to maximize Liberty's marketplace presence.
- Working closely with Surety claims department and all other key internal stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery of underwriting services.
- Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Preparation, Training and Experience
- Progressive surety underwriting experience and/or other related business experience.
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility that includes competence with all phases & aspects of the underwriting process. and proficiency in the use of qualitative & quantitative tools & techniques.
- Must demonstrate comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/ workflows to properly manage or administer those issues.
- Demonstrated track record of business development and has achieved results through relationships. Degree ideally in Finance, Business, Economics, Accounting, or Law typically expected.
- Mature and self-confident; ability to face clients, business partners and senior colleagues.
- Proven ability to develop strong relationships and market to external customers.
- Must be detail-oriented, able to manage time and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while working independently.
- Knowledge of regulatory and legal requirements affecting Surety industry.
- Fluent in local language and proficient in English (verbal and written). Additional languages are a plus.
- Strong economic, political, and current affairs understanding and knowledge.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with all stakeholders (brokers, clients, colleagues and other business partners), including the ability to communicate complex analysis and information in understandable written and/or oral directives to other people and customers.
- Displays strong collaboration and team integration abilities.
- Profound computer skills, in particular Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, but also AI (ChatGPT/Copilot).
